MISHKA NOW OFFICIALLY AT SHELFLIFE

MISHKA aka "Мишка" started shortly after Greg stayed over Mikhail's house in Brooklyn. Greg had just got back from Europe and had purchased a very obscure Black Metal record from a band called Sacrifyx. A band who, it is rumored, died in a plane crash the night after recording their Black Metal opus. The rumor also claimed they buried a powerful prayer to Satan on the record. So of course the boys decided to play the record backwards. Soon after, a gateway opened up in Mikhail's bedroom. What happened after that not to many people are certain, but soon after MISHKA was born!

MISHKA CLOTHING CO

Rumour has it that Mishka was started after two kids got their hands on an evil black metal album and played it backwards as a homage to Satan. Others say it was started by two guys called Greg and Mikhail who were sick of doing design work for other people and wanted to follow their own creative direction. Their influences are noticably different to other streetwear brands, focusing more on punk rock and horror comics than bling, money and guns.

In their own words: "We just gravitate towards the obscure and oddball. We understand that only a handful of people will get our references, but we try to balance that by presenting them in a strong visual manner that anyone can enjoy without fully understanding it.....We continue to love what we design. We make things that we want to wear. We are weird oddball kids and I think the brands reflects that."

Mishka offers a full collection ranging from denim and tees to outerwear and accessories, all in their unique fashion.

Artist Collaborations
While most companies often lose consistency when they do artist collaborations, Mishka works closely with emerging artists to make sure graphics are both fresh, and purely Mishka. They have worked with several talented comic artists in the past including: Andy Rementer, Jon Vermilyea and Dennis Chow. According to Mishka there are several collaborations in the pipe line including a project with talented NY artist and designer JK5.

The blacklight series each frame boasts a matte finish accented nicely by the iridium lenses (although blacklight green comes with a grey lens). The interchangeable nature of Frogskins can also lead to some interesting combinations should you end up with a few different colors of these.

Following up on our own PUMA x SHELFLIFE colab another very exclusive product range has dropped in store today! PUMA has partnered with legendary culture brand, Undefeated, to launch the UNDEFEATED (UNDFTD) Collection with PUMA, a special collection centered around one of PUMA’s most iconic and celebrated styles: The PUMA Clyde. This long term project will make Undefeated a true design partner with PUMA, designing a collection of PUMA Clydes that will be released in the beginning of April and continue throughout 2011 and beyond.

The partnership between PUMA and Undefeated is about pushing boundaries and refreshing a classic style and icon, The PUMA Clyde. Undefeated and PUMA explored trends in the marketplace and collaborated to interpret these fashion and lifestyle nuances into footwear styles that are inclusive of both brands.

UNDFTD wanted to build on their own military inspired season theme with fabrics to transform the Clyde. The NRC’s are made from a high-quality Ripstop material. Ripstop fabrics are woven fabrics often made out of nylon, using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing and ripping. During weaving (thick) reinforcement threads are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern. Typically Ripstop fabrics are used in yacht sails and spinnakers, hot air balloons, kites, parachutes...so needlees to say these kicks should be pretty tough wearing!

AS FEATURED ON MTN BLOG: It was just 20 years ago that Mozambique freed itself from a war which had its two political parties, the Frelimo (The Liberation Front of Mozambique) and the Renamo (The Mozambican National Resistance), at odds during three decades, each trying to seize power after more than 500 years of Portuguese occupation. It is now a country in which the mortality rate of children is still very high and life expectancy is very low, despite having a slightly improved economic situation.

Despite all of the above, graffiti has made its way to the country, by the hand of the only writer from the country, Shot B. This underground Mozambican rapper left his signature in the capital city in which he lives, Maputo, between political and religious slogans, as well as some insults at neighbors or ex-girlfriends. This country has not yet had the good fortune to develop itself in the world of graffiti, unlike its neighboring country, South Africa. Here, it’s difficult to explain to everyone why two people would paint a 20 x 3 wall in an interior courtyard of a block of houses, without receiving any payment in return…

But who better to explain how it happened than the graffiti writer Spank One:

Montana colors put me in contact with the Shelflife store in Cape Town (South Africa), and without many problems, 40 cans of MTN 94 arrived to me in Maputo, in the space of just 8 days. It was the first time that something like that had happened around here. According to Shot-B, this was going to be the first Montana Colors wall in the country.

After driving around a bit in his car, we found the wall in an interior courtyard in the center of Maputo. One of the neighbors got furious when she saw that we were whitewashing the wall of ‘her house’, but when she saw the final result at the end of the day, her facial expression told a different story.

The Berlin based film makers Henrik Regel and Björn Birg dive deep into the unknown universe of train writers. With first class interviews they received material which has never been screened before. The film investigates background information to specific actions and historical material from the legendary corner on the Friedrichstrasse. The place to meet for graffiti artists since the 90's. The place where the legend of the Berlin Writer culture has its origins.

In this sense, UNLIKE U is not a normal graffiti video, in which action after action and train after train gets shown, rather the video is a sympathetic portrait of a scene which has never been shown like this before. The film makers have worked on this documentary for over 7 years and have thus established a good relationship in the scene, which can be described as a 'closed party'.

So, we just gave you a mega post on all the new DVD's we received the other day. With that order also came a whole pile of new books.

Back in the store is SUICIDE GIRLS: BEAUTY REDEFINED. Beauty Redefined explores the Suicide Girl phenomenon from their start in 2001 to their websites one million unique weekly visitors today. This giant tome provides a timely look at the fascinating women who created and inhabit the SG community.

SABER: MAD SOCIETY. Born in 1976 in Glendale, California, SABER had already made his name a visual fixture in Los Angeles by the end of his teens. But it was as a 20-year-old that he completed the painting that would catapult him to the status of a global legend. His piece on the sloping bank of the Los Angeles River is nearly the size of a football field, and can be read clear as day from a satellite photo. In a famous photograph taken by his father just after it was completed SABER stands on the piece and appears as a tiny speck amid a giant blaze of color.

"513 Premium Wear is a project which i started during late 2010. the concept grew through a combination of my interests in graffiti, blogging, clothing and supporting South African street culture.

The 513 range consists of three t-shirts, two sweaters, and caps. the designs are all drawn by hand, using graffiti markers which were scanned and edited to create the final designs.

Baksys famous 'Exit through the Gift Shop' has finally hit the shelves in South Africa at Shelflife. After the 4week long run at the Labia and then the 'Team Robbo South Africa' video, this film has brought quite a bit of controversy onto the streets...it even got nominated for an Academy Award.
